Fira del Cavall de Puigcerdà
The Fira de Puigcerda is an annual carnival and horse fair, held in Cerdanya, which attracts breeders, farmers and visitors from across the northern Catalonian region.
It takes place in the first weekend of November across two days.
The Fira in Puigcerdà dates back to the year 1182, when King Alfonso I, with the purpose of economic development of the village, promoted a fair for the Mare de Déu d'Agost that attracted visitors from all the country. Later in May 1270, as a result of the commercial success and the need for expansion, Jaume de Mallorca granted privileges for a second fair, this one for the celebration of All Saints. However, the multiple war periods of the 17th century contributed to its decline. It was not until the beginning of the twentieth century when the Fira was reactivated again. From 1922 "La Gran Feria de Ganado", becomes one of the most important equine fairs in the country, with breeders coming from all over Spain.
The focus on the horse fair is the indigenous breed of the Pyrenees, with around one thousands horse on show and for sale. As well as the horse fair there are market stalls with around 300 vendors of local products, local food, farming goods and implements, horse and bridal goods and a selection of bars and pop-up canteens. In the arena, horses are paraded and compete for best in class, auctions are held.
The event provides and important opportunity for the border communities (from France, Spain and Llivia) and their remote rural locations to come together.
